What’s happening:

  • Wikimania 2017 was held from August 9–13 in Montreal.
  • The death of open-source software developer Bassel Khartabil has been confirmed.
  • Cycle 3 of the Wikimedia movement strategy consultation continued at Wikimania.
  • The Wikipedia Signpost published an issue on August 5, 2017.
  • Prior to Wikimania, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees met to appoint new trustees and elected officers.  María Sefidari and Dariusz Jemielniak continued on the board, and James Heilman rejoined the board after all three were re-elected.  Christophe Henner will continue as chair and María Sefidari will continue as vice chair.
  • Wikimedia France is still in crisis.  Two general meetings will take place in September and October.  Ten of the twelve seats are expected to be filled by new members.  New board members are expected to be appointed at the Sept. 9 general meeting.
  • Amendments have been proposed to the text of Code of Conduct in technical spaces.  Comment is invited.
  • Feedback from the Wikimania strategy sessions is available on meta.
  • Wikimedia Foundation has introduced training modules for harassment at the Program and Events DashboardInstructions are available to use the dashboard to create other types of training modules.
  • The foundation published a transparency report that describes requests for removal received in the first six months of 2017.
  • Wiki Loves Monuments has a photo contest through September.
